150 Years of Light in Canada

The diversity of light in Canada is as rich as its people's cultural heritage. Qualities of natural light vary by season, time of day and geography. Prairie landscapes reveal a different light than seascapes'.  Increasingly, the light we see is artificial. Today's Canadians are urbanites living and working in forests of tall buildings that cut off or redirect natural light. Our perception of indoor illumination has been shaped by the development of industrial lighting.

Visual artists in Canada have internalized and interpreted the changing spectrum of light that they see, be it inner light, reflected light, or the darkness that frames it.

Contemporary images range from the early Canadian representational aesthetic to the most recent array of nonobjective art.

In acknowledgement to Canada's sesquicentennial, artists are invited to submit work in any visual form or medium for our Light in Canada exhibition to be held July 5 to 16th, 2017.
