Some pictures demand to be taken, for their inherent strength or associations. Others have to be worked for. ‘The Camera as Witness’ defines my approach. This produces sequences of images illustrating change over time; series of images which collectively show the character of a place; or single images of telling details. We are in a time of economic turmoil and, in many parts of the world, great social change. Different cultures are at different stages of their evolution, but everywhere the future is eating the past. Our western lifestyle is not sustainable, but it is what the world aspires to, or loathes. Images of the modern city present a horizontal archeology of urban evolution. Urban and social changes reflect our desires and our fate - what we wish for, or what is thrust upon us. With an education and professional career in Architecture and Urban Design, my interest is mainly in cities and structures. An education based on the Bauhaus method biases me toward graphic potential, collage, and abstraction. I produce urban imagery on the boundary of figuration and abstraction
